Gastritis Symptoms in Katy, TX

A burning or gnawing ache in the upper stomach, nausea, bloating or feeling full after a few bites can all be symptoms of gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining. At the United Gastroenterology Associates office in Katy, board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan finds the cause, such as H. pylori infection or pain relievers, and treats it.

What Is Gastritis?

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. The lining normally produces a protective layer of mucus; when it is irritated or infected, acid can inflame it and cause pain, nausea and indigestion.

Gastritis can be acute, appearing suddenly after a trigger such as a pain reliever or heavy drinking, or chronic, developing slowly over months or years, most often because of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection.

Many people with gastritis have mild symptoms or none at all, which is why persistent upper stomach symptoms deserve an evaluation.

What Are the Symptoms of Gastritis?

Diagram of a normal stomach lining compared with gastritis inflammation

Gastritis symptoms usually center on the upper abdomen, just below the breastbone. They can come and go, and they may improve or worsen after meals.

Some people only notice gastritis when a complication appears, such as bleeding or anemia.

When to seek emergency care

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, pass black or tarry stools, or feel faint.

Common gastritis symptoms

  • Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen
  • Nausea, with or without vomiting
  • Feeling full after eating only a little
  • Bloating and belching
  • Indigestion or an upset stomach
  • Loss of appetite
  • Upper abdominal discomfort at night or on an empty stomach

These symptoms can also come from ulcers, reflux or gallbladder problems. A qualified medical professional should evaluate them.

What Does Gastritis Pain Feel Like?

Gastritis pain is usually described as a burning, gnawing or aching feeling in the upper middle abdomen. It may feel sharper when the stomach is empty or be triggered by spicy, fatty or acidic foods, alcohol and coffee.

Unlike the chest burning of acid reflux, gastritis pain sits below the ribs, in the “pit” of the stomach. Pain that spreads to the back, pain on the right side under the ribs, or severe sudden pain points to other causes and needs prompt attention.

What Causes Gastritis?

Finding the cause is the key to treating gastritis and keeping it from returning.

H. pylori Infection

A common bacterial infection of the stomach and the leading cause of chronic gastritis and stomach ulcers.

H. pylori testing and treatment

NSAID Pain Relievers

Regular ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin can wear down the stomach’s protective lining.

Alcohol

Heavy or frequent drinking irritates the stomach lining and can cause acute gastritis.

Bile Reflux

Bile flowing back into the stomach, sometimes after gallbladder or stomach surgery, can inflame the lining.

Autoimmune Gastritis

The immune system attacks stomach cells, which can lead to low vitamin B12 and iron levels.

Severe Illness or Stress

Major surgery, burns or critical illness can cause stress-related gastritis in hospitalized patients.

Get Your Gastritis Symptoms Checked in Katy

Dr. Khan evaluates upper stomach pain, nausea and indigestion at the Katy office on I-10 and tests for common causes such as H. pylori.

How Is Gastritis Diagnosed?

Your history often points to the cause. Testing confirms it and checks for complications.

History and Medication Review

Symptom pattern, use of pain relievers and alcohol, past ulcers and family history of stomach cancer.

H. pylori and Blood Tests

A breath or stool test can detect H. pylori. Blood tests check for anemia and, when needed, vitamin B12 levels.

Upper Endoscopy (EGD)

A thin camera examines the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Small biopsies confirm gastritis, check for H. pylori and look for precancerous changes.

Endoscopy in Katy

An endoscopy is recommended for warning signs, symptoms that do not respond to treatment, or when biopsies are needed.

How Is Gastritis Treated?

Treatment targets the cause and gives the stomach lining time to heal.

Treating H. pylori

A combination of antibiotics and an acid-reducing medicine, followed by a test to confirm the infection is gone.

Acid-Reducing Medication

Medicines that lower stomach acid ease pain and allow the lining to heal.

Stopping Irritants

Reducing or stopping NSAIDs and alcohol, with safer pain relief options discussed with your doctor.

Eating Habits

Smaller meals and limiting foods that trigger your symptoms can reduce discomfort while you heal.

Vitamin Replacement

B12 or iron when autoimmune gastritis or long-standing inflammation has caused a deficiency.

Follow-Up

Repeat testing or endoscopy when needed to confirm healing.

When Should You See a Doctor for Gastritis Symptoms?

Make an appointment if upper stomach pain, nausea or indigestion lasts more than a week or keeps returning. Seek prompt care for:
  • Black or tarry stools, or vomiting blood
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • A family history of stomach cancer

Severe, sudden abdominal pain needs emergency care.

Gastritis Symptoms in Katy: FAQs

Answers to common questions about gastritis and stomach inflammation care at the Katy office.

What are the first signs of gastritis?

Early gastritis often causes a burning or gnawing ache in the upper stomach, nausea, bloating or feeling full quickly after eating. Some people have no symptoms.

Where is gastritis pain felt?

Usually in the upper middle abdomen, below the breastbone. Pain under the right ribs or spreading to the back suggests other causes.

How long does gastritis last?

Acute gastritis often improves within days to weeks once the trigger is removed. Chronic gastritis, such as from H. pylori, lasts until the cause is treated.

Can gastritis go away on its own?

Mild gastritis from a short-term trigger may settle on its own. Gastritis caused by H. pylori needs treatment to clear the infection.

Is gastritis serious?

Most gastritis is treatable. Untreated, it can lead to ulcers, bleeding or anemia, and long-term H. pylori or autoimmune gastritis can increase the risk of stomach cancer.

Do I need an endoscopy for gastritis?

Not always. An endoscopy is recommended for warning signs, symptoms that do not improve with treatment, or when biopsies are needed.
