Dr. Khan completed medical school at Dow Medical College, an internal medicine residency at the University of Toledo, Ohio, and a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and as an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. What to Expect at Your First Visit
At a first appointment, Dr. Khan reviews your symptoms, medical history, medications and any earlier test results, then explains which conditions could fit and what, if anything, needs testing. Many visits end with a plan that starts with blood or stool tests, imaging, a medication change or a procedure such as colonoscopy or upper endoscopy. Procedures are scheduled through the same practice, and the office explains preparation and verifies insurance benefits beforehand.

When to book with a gastroenterologist
Consider an appointment when digestive symptoms last more than a few weeks, keep coming back or are getting worse. Adults at average risk should also discuss colorectal cancer screening from age 45, or earlier with a family history or other risk factors.
