Symptoms of Pancreatic Disorders
Pancreatic symptoms often begin in the upper abdomen and may spread to the back. Some conditions, such as pancreatic cysts, often cause no symptoms and are found on imaging done for another reason.

When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for sudden, severe upper abdominal pain, especially with vomiting, fever, a rapid heartbeat, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Pancreatic Disorder Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the type of pancreatic disorder and its cause. The goals are to relieve pain, restore digestion and nutrition, treat the cause, and prevent complications.
Diagnostic Testing
Testing may include CT scans, MRI, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) to get detailed images of the pancreas and surrounding organs. Blood tests are also used to detect signs of inflammation, infection, or cancer.
Medication Management
For conditions like chronic pancreatitis or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), medications such as enzyme supplements or pain relievers may be prescribed to help manage symptoms and improve digestion.
Endoscopic Procedures
For patients with pancreatic pseudocysts, bile duct blockages, or tumors, minimally invasive endoscopic procedures may be recommended to remove blockages, drain cysts, or take biopsy samples.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, MD, FACP, FASGE, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist who sees patients at the United Gastroenterology Associates offices in Cypress and Katy. He evaluates and manages pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and coordinates with surgical and oncology specialists when needed.
Dr. Khan earned his medical degree at Dow Medical College, completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Toledo, and completed a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and as an Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
