Symptoms of Liver Disease

Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, MD, FACP, FASGE, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist who sees patients at the United Gastroenterology Associates offices in Cypress and Katy. He evaluates and manages fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and other liver conditions, and coordinates with surgical and transplant centers when advanced care is needed.
Dr. Khan earned his medical degree at Dow Medical College, completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Toledo, and completed a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and as an Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

What is the difference between a gastroenterologist and a hepatologist?
A gastroenterologist treats the whole digestive system. A hepatologist focuses on the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. Dr. Khan is board-certified in both gastroenterology and hepatology.
When should I see a hepatologist?
See a liver specialist if blood tests show elevated liver enzymes, imaging shows fatty liver or scarring, you have hepatitis B or C, or you have signs such as jaundice, abdominal swelling, or dark urine.
What tests are used to check liver health?
Common tests include liver blood tests, hepatitis testing, ultrasound, CT or MRI, and FibroScan, a noninvasive test that measures liver stiffness and fat. A liver biopsy is sometimes needed.
Can liver damage be reversed?
Early liver damage, such as fatty liver and some fibrosis, can improve when the cause is treated, for example with weight loss, stopping alcohol, or antiviral treatment. Advanced cirrhosis is usually not reversible, but treatment can slow progression and prevent complications.
Is fatty liver disease serious?
Fatty liver is common and often has no symptoms. In some people it causes inflammation and scarring that can progress to cirrhosis, so it should be evaluated and monitored.
Do you treat hepatitis B and hepatitis C?
Yes. Dr. Khan evaluates and manages viral hepatitis. Hepatitis C can usually be cured with antiviral medicine, and hepatitis B can be controlled with long-term treatment and monitoring.
