Chronic vs. Acute Gastritis
Acute gastritis starts suddenly, often after alcohol, a course of pain relievers or an infection, and usually settles once the trigger is removed.
Chronic gastritis develops slowly and can last for years. The two most common causes are long-standing H. pylori infection and autoimmune gastritis, in which the immune system attacks acid-producing cells. Over time, chronic inflammation can thin the stomach lining, a condition called atrophic gastritis, which affects vitamin B12 and iron absorption and raises the risk of stomach cancer.
Because chronic gastritis often causes mild or no symptoms, it is sometimes found only through blood tests or an endoscopy.

What Are Chronic Gastritis Symptoms?
Chronic gastritis symptoms tend to be subtle and easy to dismiss:
Chronic gastritis symptoms
- Recurring indigestion or a dull upper stomach ache
- Nausea, especially in the morning
- Feeling full quickly
- Upper abdominal bloating or belching
- Fatigue, weakness or shortness of breath from anemia
- Tingling, numbness or memory problems from low vitamin B12
- No symptoms at all in many people
Anemia and B12 deficiency have other causes too. A qualified medical professional should evaluate these symptoms.
Why Chronic Gastritis Should Not Be Ignored
Treating chronic gastritis prevents complications that can develop quietly.
Stomach Ulcers
H. pylori gastritis is a leading cause of ulcers, which can bleed.
Anemia
Slow bleeding or poor iron absorption can cause iron-deficiency anemia.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Autoimmune gastritis reduces a protein needed to absorb B12, affecting nerves and blood.
Stomach Cancer Risk
Long-term H. pylori and atrophic gastritis increase risk; some patients benefit from endoscopic surveillance.

H. pylori Testing
Breath or stool testing for active infection, with a follow-up test after treatment.
Endoscopy With Biopsy
Biopsies from several areas of the stomach show the type and extent of gastritis and check for precancerous changes.
Treatment for Chronic Gastritis
Treatment is tailored to the type of gastritis you have.
Clearing H. pylori
Antibiotic combination therapy with an acid-reducing medicine, then a test of cure.
Correcting Deficiencies
Vitamin B12 and iron replacement when levels are low.
Symptom Relief
Acid-reducing medication and diet adjustments for ongoing indigestion.
Surveillance When Needed
Periodic endoscopy for patients with extensive atrophic gastritis or other high-risk findings.
This information is educational. Do not start or stop medication without medical advice.
When to Seek Care Promptly
Seek prompt care for black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting or a family history of stomach cancer. Severe, sudden abdominal pain needs emergency care.

What are the symptoms of chronic gastritis?
Recurring indigestion, a dull upper stomach ache, nausea, early fullness and bloating. Some people only notice fatigue from anemia or have no symptoms.
Can chronic gastritis be cured?
Gastritis caused by H. pylori usually improves after the infection is cleared. Autoimmune gastritis is managed long-term, including vitamin B12 replacement.

How often do I need an endoscopy?
