Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) at United Gastroenterology Associates
At United Gastroenterology Associates, we are dedicated to offering comprehensive care for your digestive health, including advanced diagnostic procedures such as Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). This minimally invasive procedure allows us to examine the upper digestive tract with precision, helping us diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that may be affecting your esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine (duodenum).
What is an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)?
EGD, also known as an upper endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and a camera (endoscope) to examine the inside of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This procedure allows us to identify issues such as inflammation, ulcers, abnormal growths, or bleeding. It can also be used to take tissue samples (biopsies) for further testing.
Why is EGD Performed?
EGD is an essential tool for diagnosing various upper gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. We recommend this procedure if you’re experiencing:
- Chronic heartburn or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Unexplained abdominal pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Unintentional weight loss
- Bleeding in the upper digestive tract
- Persistent bloating or indigestion
By identifying the root cause of your symptoms, EGD helps us develop effective, targeted treatment plans to relieve discomfort and improve your overall digestive health.
Conditions Diagnosed with EGD
- GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
- Barrett’s Esophagus
- Esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus)
- Hiatal Hernia
- Peptic Ulcers (in the stomach or duodenum)
- Celiac Disease
- Gastritis
- Esophageal or Stomach Cancer
- Polyps or abnormal growths
- Upper GI Bleeding
What to Expect During an EGD
We strive to ensure your EGD is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure:
- Preparation: You will need to fast for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure to ensure your stomach and upper digestive tract are clear. Our team will provide you with specific preparation instructions.
- The Procedure: The EGD typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll be sedated to help you relax and feel comfortable. The endoscope will be gently guided through your mouth and down into your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. As the camera transmits images, we’ll closely examine your upper digestive tract for any signs of abnormalities.
After the Procedure: You’ll be monitored for a short time until the sedation wears off, and you can typically go home the same day. It’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home, as the sedation may leave you feeling drowsy. Most patients can resume normal activities the following day.
Benefits of EGD
- Minimally invasive: EGD allows us to view your upper digestive tract without surgery.
- Accurate diagnosis: It provides a clear, detailed view, enabling us to identify the cause of your symptoms and make an accurate diagnosis.
- Biopsy capability: EGD can also be used to take tissue samples (biopsies) for further analysis, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions like cancer or celiac disease.
- Therapeutic use: In some cases, EGD can be used to treat certain conditions, such as stretching narrowed areas (dilation) or removing polyps during the same procedure.
