Comprehensive Care for Gastrointestinal Cancers
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are cancers of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. A gastroenterologist plays a key role in screening, diagnosis, endoscopic treatment of early lesions, and follow-up, working with oncologists and surgeons who provide chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. At United Gastroenterology Associates, this care is provided by Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan at offices in Cypress and Katy, TX.
Gastrointestinal cancers can have a significant impact on your health. At United Gastroenterology Associates, we diagnose a wide range of GI cancers and help manage digestive care during and after treatment. Whether you need a routine screening, are experiencing symptoms, or need care after a cancer diagnosis, the clinic provides the testing and specialist evaluation you need and coordinates with your cancer care team.
Cancers of the digestive system can be life-threatening if not detected early. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, play a vital role in identifying cancer at an early stage when it’s most treatable. Our team is dedicated to providing comprehensive screenings and early intervention to improve outcomes.

Types of GI Cancers We Help Diagnose and Manage
Dr. Khan evaluates patients for cancers throughout the digestive tract. Treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation is provided by surgical and medical oncology specialists, with gastroenterology care coordinated throughout.
Colorectal Cancer
Screening colonoscopy can find and remove precancerous polyps. Diagnostic colonoscopy evaluates bleeding, anemia, or a positive stool test.
Esophageal Cancer
Upper endoscopy evaluates difficulty swallowing and monitors Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can lead to esophageal cancer.
Stomach (Gastric) Cancer
Upper endoscopy with biopsy evaluates ongoing indigestion, bleeding, or anemia and checks for stomach cancer and precancerous changes.
Pancreatic Cancer
Evaluation of warning signs such as jaundice, weight loss, or pancreatic cysts, with imaging and referral for specialized testing.
Liver Cancer
Surveillance for people at higher risk, such as those with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B, usually with ultrasound every six months.
Gallbladder Cancer
Evaluation of gallbladder and bile duct findings on imaging, with coordination of surgical and oncology care.
Small Intestinal Cancer
Capsule endoscopy and imaging help evaluate hidden bleeding or anemia from the small intestine.
Warning Signs of Gastrointestinal Cancer
Early GI cancers often cause no symptoms, which is why screening matters. When symptoms occur, they depend on where the cancer is and may include the signs below.
If you notice any of these signs, especially if they last more than a few weeks, schedule an evaluation with a gastroenterologist.
When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for vomiting blood, heavy rectal bleeding, black or tarry stools with dizziness or fainting, or severe abdominal pain.
Signs that should be evaluated
- Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
- Black or tarry stools
- A lasting change in bowel habits
- Difficulty or pain with swallowing
- Unexplained weight loss
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Ongoing abdominal pain or indigestion
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
A symptom alone does not confirm a diagnosis. Symptoms should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
Due for Screening or Noticing Warning Signs?
Adults at average risk should begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Dr. Khan evaluates screening needs and symptoms at the Cypress and Katy offices.
What You Can Expect: Diagnostic Procedures
Endoscopic procedures let a gastroenterologist see the lining of the digestive tract, take biopsies, and remove many precancerous polyps during the same exam.
Colonoscopy
A key test for screening colorectal cancer and removing polyps, providing a full examination of the colon and rectum.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
A minimally invasive procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine your esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine, helping diagnose ulcers, tumors, or inflammation. Tissue samples can be taken during the exam.
Capsule Endoscopy
A non-invasive procedure where a tiny camera in a capsule captures images of your digestive tract, providing a detailed view of hard-to-reach areas.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
This procedure examines the lower colon to detect early signs of cancer, polyps, or inflammation.
FibroScan
A non-invasive test that measures liver stiffness to help detect liver diseases like fibrosis and cirrhosis early on. Advanced scarring raises the risk of liver cancer and calls for regular surveillance.
Feeding Tube Placement
For patients with difficulty eating, a feeding tube may be placed endoscopically to support nutrition during treatment.
“My gastroenterology & hepatology practice is dedicated to working closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your unique needs and preferences.”
