Endoscopic Procedures
Endoscopic procedures use a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine the digestive tract. Most are outpatient procedures done with sedation, and many problems can be treated during the same exam.
Colonoscopy
Examines the entire colon and rectum to screen for colorectal cancer, remove polyps, and evaluate bleeding, diarrhea, or anemia.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
Examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to evaluate heartburn, trouble swallowing, ulcers, bleeding, and anemia.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Examines the rectum and lower colon with less preparation than a full colonoscopy.
Capsule Endoscopy
A swallowed camera capsule records images of the small intestine to find hidden bleeding, anemia, or Crohn’s disease.
ERCP
Combines endoscopy and X-ray to diagnose and treat bile duct and pancreatic duct problems, such as removing bile duct stones.

Tests the muscles and nerves of the rectum and anus to evaluate chronic constipation or fecal incontinence.
Abdominal Ultrasound
Imaging of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas to evaluate pain, abnormal liver tests, and gallstones.
Hemorrhoid Treatment
Office-based and medical treatment for bleeding, itching, or painful hemorrhoids.
Infusion Therapy
Intravenous biologic medicines for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and intravenous iron for iron-deficiency anemia.
When Is a GI Procedure Recommended?
A procedure is recommended when it can answer a question that history, examination, and lab tests cannot, or when it can treat a problem directly. Screening colonoscopy is also recommended for adults at average risk starting at age 45.
Dr. Khan reviews your symptoms, medicines, and prior test results first, and recommends only the tests that are useful for your situation.
When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for vomiting blood, heavy rectal bleeding, black or tarry stools with dizziness, food stuck in the esophagus that you cannot swallow, or severe abdominal pain.

What to Expect on Procedure Day
Most GI procedures are outpatient procedures. You go home the same day with written instructions and a plan for your results.
Before your procedure
Follow the written prep instructions for your procedure. Colonoscopy requires a clear liquid diet and a bowel preparation, and EGD requires fasting. Tell the office about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, and allergies.
During your procedure
Most endoscopic procedures are done with sedation and take 15 to 60 minutes. Your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen level are monitored throughout.
After your procedure
You rest while sedation wears off, and an adult must drive you home. Dr. Khan explains initial findings, and biopsy results are reviewed with you when they are ready.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, MD, FACP, FASGE, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist who sees patients at the United Gastroenterology Associates offices in Cypress and Katy. He performs colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, and other endoscopic procedures.
Dr. Khan earned his medical degree at Dow Medical College, completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Toledo, and completed a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. What is the difference between a colonoscopy and an endoscopy?
A colonoscopy examines the colon and rectum through the anus. An upper endoscopy (EGD) examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum through the mouth. Both use a flexible camera and are usually done with sedation.
Are GI procedures painful?
Most patients feel little or no discomfort because procedures such as colonoscopy and EGD are done with sedation. You may feel bloated or have a mild sore throat afterward.
How long does a colonoscopy or EGD take?
An EGD usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and a colonoscopy 30 to 60 minutes. Plan to spend about two to three hours at the facility, including check-in and recovery.
Can I drive home after my procedure?
No. After sedation, an adult must drive you home, and you should not drive or make important decisions for the rest of the day.
How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?

When should I get a screening colonoscopy?

Is a FibroScan the same as an ultrasound?
No. FibroScan uses ultrasound-based technology to measure liver stiffness and fat, while a standard abdominal ultrasound creates images of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
