What Is Acid Reflux, and When Does It Need Treatment?
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn or regurgitation. Reflux that occurs twice a week or more, or that causes complications, is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist when symptoms are frequent, do not improve with over-the-counter treatment, or come with warning signs such as difficulty swallowing or weight loss.
At United Gastroenterology Associates, PLLC, we understand how disruptive acid reflux (GERD) can be in your daily life. Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when stomach acid flows back into your esophagus, causing discomfort and a burning sensation commonly referred to as heartburn. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious health issues, but with the right care, relief is within reach.
Our team, led by Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, a board-certified expert in gastroenterology and hepatology, specializes in diagnosing and treating acid reflux and GERD, providing solutions tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re struggling with frequent heartburn or experiencing symptoms like difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or regurgitation, we are here to help.

Acid Reflux Causes
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. This backflow, or reflux, causes irritation and discomfort, most commonly experienced as heartburn. While occasional heartburn after a heavy meal is normal, frequent episodes of acid reflux could be a sign of a more serious condition called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
Factors that can make reflux more likely include excess weight, pregnancy, smoking, a hiatal hernia, large or late meals, and certain medicines. Common triggers such as fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, and lying down soon after eating can make symptoms worse.1
Symptoms of Acid Reflux
Understanding the symptoms of acid reflux is the first step toward effective treatment. Some of the most common symptoms include:
Acid reflux can be more than just an inconvenience—it can signal a more serious underlying issue.
When to seek emergency care
Chest pain can also be a sign of a heart problem. Call 911 for chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back, and seek emergency care for vomiting blood or black, tarry stools.
Common symptoms of acid reflux
- Persistent heartburn
- Sour taste in the mouth
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
- Trouble swallowing
- Coughing, wheezing, or sore throat
Symptoms should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
How Is Acid Reflux (GERD) Diagnosed?
Our comprehensive diagnostic process ensures we get to the root of your acid reflux or GERD. We utilize advanced tools such as endoscopy to view the esophagus and check for inflammation, ulcers, or other signs of damage caused by stomach acid. We may also perform pH monitoring to measure acid levels in the esophagus, providing a complete picture of your condition.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
What it is: A thin, flexible camera is used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
What it shows: Inflammation (esophagitis), ulcers, strictures, a hiatal hernia, or changes such as Barrett’s esophagus. Biopsies can be taken when needed.

Ask About Upper Endoscopy
Esophageal pH Monitoring
What it is: A test that measures how often, and for how long, stomach acid enters the esophagus.
Why it may be recommended: To confirm GERD when symptoms continue despite treatment or when the diagnosis is unclear.
Get Expert GI Care NowNot every patient with heartburn needs testing. Dr. Khan recommends tests based on your symptoms, how long they have lasted, how they respond to treatment, and whether warning signs are present.
How Is Acid Reflux Treated?
Treatment depends on how often symptoms occur, what testing shows, and whether complications are present. Many patients improve with a combination of the approaches below.
Lifestyle and diet changes
Smaller meals, not eating two to three hours before lying down, raising the head of the bed, limiting trigger foods and alcohol, not smoking, and reaching a healthy weight.
Medication management
Antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce stomach acid. Dr. Khan adjusts the type, dose, and length of treatment to your needs.
Evaluation of complications
Long-standing reflux can cause esophagitis, strictures, or Barrett’s esophagus. An upper endoscopy helps find and monitor these conditions.
Endoscopic therapy when appropriate
Some complications can be treated during endoscopy, such as widening a narrowed esophagus or treating Barrett’s esophagus.
Follow-up care
Follow-up visits check how well treatment is working and whether medications can be reduced once symptoms are controlled.
Referral when surgery may help
For selected patients whose reflux does not respond to other treatment, Dr. Khan can discuss surgical options and coordinate a referral.
This information is general. Your treatment plan should be based on an evaluation by a qualified physician.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acid Reflux
Answers to common questions about acid reflux and GERD from patients in the Houston area.
What is the difference between acid reflux and GERD?
Acid reflux is the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. GERD is a chronic form of reflux that happens often, usually twice a week or more, or that causes symptoms or complications.
When should I see a gastroenterologist for acid reflux?
See a gastroenterologist if heartburn happens two or more times a week, does not improve with over-the-counter treatment, or comes with difficulty swallowing, vomiting, weight loss, or black stools.
How can I prevent acid reflux while sleeping?
- Elevate the head of your bed, avoid eating late at night, and sleep on your left side to reduce acid reflux symptoms while you rest.
Can stress cause acid reflux?
- Yes, stress can exacerbate GERD symptoms by increasing acid production and delaying digestion. Incorporating relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation can help.
How long does acid reflux last after eating?
- Symptoms typically begin within an hour after eating and can last for several hours. Avoiding trigger foods and not lying down immediately after meals can help reduce symptoms.
Is acid reflux a sign of something more serious?
- Persistent acid reflux may indicate a more serious condition such as esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus. If you experience chronic symptoms, it’s essential to consult a specialist.
Can GERD be cured permanently?
- While GERD can often be managed effectively, it’s a chronic condition for many people. With the right combination of treatments, including lifestyle changes and medication, symptoms can be significantly reduced and managed long-term.
Do I need an endoscopy for acid reflux?
Not always. An upper endoscopy may be recommended when symptoms persist despite treatment, when warning signs are present, or to check for complications such as Barrett’s esophagus.
