Expert Fatty Liver Care in Cypress & Katy

Fatty Liver Specialist in Cypress & Katy, TX

Fatty liver occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver. It may be discovered during routine blood work or imaging, and many people have few or no symptoms during the early stages. Because fatty liver disease can be associated with inflammation, liver fibrosis, and progressive liver damage in some individuals, appropriate evaluation and follow-up can be important. At United Gastroenterology Associates, Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, MD, FACP, FASGE, a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist, evaluates and manages fatty liver disease at offices in Cypress and Katy, TX.

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Fatty liver disease is the buildup of excess fat in the liver. The most common form is MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), formerly called NAFLD, which is linked to excess weight, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and high triglycerides. Many people have no symptoms, and it is often found on routine blood tests or imaging. A fatty liver specialist in Cypress or Katy can check for inflammation and scarring and recommend a plan.

Fatty liver disease refers to the accumulation of excess fat in the liver. Healthcare professionals may use different terms depending on the underlying cause and a patient's overall health. You may hear terms such as:
  • Fatty liver
  • Hepatic steatosis
  • MASLD
  • NAFLD
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease

MASLD is the newer terminology used for a common form of fatty liver disease associated with metabolic risk factors. NAFLD, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is an older term that remains widely used in patient searches and medical records.

A fatty liver diagnosis does not necessarily mean that severe liver damage is present. However, some people may develop inflammation or scarring over time, which is why appropriate evaluation is important.

At United Gastroenterology Associates, we provide evaluation and management for patients with fatty liver, abnormal liver enzymes, suspected liver disease, and other liver-related concerns.

What Causes Fatty Liver?

fatty liver specialist Cypress TX Fatty liver can develop for different reasons. It may be associated with metabolic factors such as:
  • Excess body weight
  • Insulin resistance
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High triglycerides
  • Other metabolic health concerns

Other causes of fat accumulation or liver injury may also need to be considered. These can include alcohol use, certain medicines, viral hepatitis, and other liver conditions.

Your medical history, medications, laboratory results, lifestyle, and imaging findings can all be important when evaluating fatty liver.

What Are the Symptoms of Fatty Liver?

Many patients have no symptoms. Fatty liver is often found on routine blood tests or imaging done for another reason.

When symptoms occur, they may be nonspecific and can vary from person to person.

Because fatty liver may not cause obvious symptoms, follow-up recommendations should be based on your individual medical situation.

Possible symptoms of fatty liver

  • Fatigue
  • General discomfort
  • A feeling of fullness or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
  • Nonspecific digestive symptoms

These symptoms are not specific to fatty liver and can occur with many other conditions. A medical evaluation is needed to determine whether symptoms are related to the liver or another cause.

Can You Have Fatty Liver Without Symptoms?

Yes. Many people with fatty liver have no noticeable symptoms, especially during earlier stages.

Fatty liver may be discovered after:
  • Routine blood tests show abnormal liver enzymes
  • An ultrasound identifies changes in the liver
  • Imaging is performed for another reason
  • A healthcare provider investigates other digestive or metabolic concerns

Concerned About Fatty Liver? We Can Help

If you have been told you have fatty liver or your liver enzymes are elevated, Dr. Khan can evaluate your liver health at the Cypress or Katy office.

When Should You See a Fatty Liver Specialist?

You may benefit from seeing a fatty liver specialist or liver doctor if:
  • You have been told you have fatty liver
  • Your liver enzymes are elevated
  • An ultrasound or other imaging suggests fatty liver
  • You have persistent abnormal liver blood tests
  • You have diabetes or other metabolic risk factors
  • You have concerns about liver fibrosis or cirrhosis
  • A healthcare provider recommends a liver evaluation
  • You have a family or personal history of liver disease

A gastroenterologist with experience in liver disease can evaluate your medical history and determine what additional testing or follow-up may be appropriate.

Fatty Liver and Abnormal Liver Enzymes

Fatty liver is one possible cause of elevated or abnormal liver enzymes, but abnormal liver tests can occur for many different reasons.

A liver evaluation may consider:
  • ALT
  • AST
  • Alkaline phosphatase
  • Bilirubin
  • Other laboratory findings

Abnormal results do not automatically identify the cause of a liver problem. A specialist can review your results along with your symptoms, medications, medical history, and other testing.

Learn more about abnormal liver enzymes.

How Is Fatty Liver Diagnosed?

The evaluation of fatty liver may involve several types of information. Your doctor may review:
  • Medical history
  • Current medications
  • Alcohol use and other relevant exposures
  • Metabolic health factors
  • Liver blood tests
  • Imaging studies
  • Previous liver evaluations

Depending on your individual situation, additional testing may be recommended.

Blood Tests

Blood tests can provide information about liver function, inflammation, and other possible causes of abnormal liver findings.

Ultrasound and Other Imaging

Imaging may identify changes consistent with fat accumulation in the liver.

Abdominal ultrasound

FibroScan

A FibroScan is a noninvasive test that can provide information about liver stiffness and may help assess the possibility of liver fibrosis in appropriate patients.

FibroScan liver elastography

Not every patient with fatty liver requires the same testing.

Fatty Liver and Liver Fibrosis

Over time, some types of chronic liver disease can lead to the development of liver fibrosis, which means scarring of the liver.

The risk and progression of fibrosis vary from person to person. When appropriate, a liver specialist may use laboratory results, imaging, or noninvasive testing to help evaluate liver health.

Early evaluation may help identify patients who need closer follow-up.

Can Fatty Liver Lead to Cirrhosis?

Some forms of fatty liver disease may progress through stages involving inflammation and fibrosis. Advanced scarring of the liver is called cirrhosis.

Not everyone with fatty liver develops cirrhosis. Individual risk depends on several factors, including the underlying type of liver disease and overall health.

Regular follow-up may be recommended for some patients based on their evaluation.

Fatty Liver Treatment and Management

The appropriate management of fatty liver depends on the underlying cause, overall health, laboratory findings, and the presence or absence of liver damage. Your treatment plan may involve addressing contributing factors and monitoring your liver health.

Depending on your individual situation, your healthcare team may discuss:

Nutrition and dietary habits

A balanced eating pattern, such as a Mediterranean-style diet, and limiting sugary drinks and processed foods.

Physical activity

Regular aerobic and strength exercise can reduce liver fat even before weight changes.

Weight management when appropriate

Gradual weight loss, when appropriate, can reduce liver fat, inflammation, and in some cases scarring.

Diabetes management

Good blood sugar control supports liver health and lowers the risk of progression.

Cholesterol and triglyceride management

Treating high cholesterol and triglycerides lowers heart and liver risk.

Avoiding substances that may contribute to liver injury

Limiting or avoiding alcohol and other substances that can harm the liver.

Reviewing medications and supplements

Some medicines and supplements can affect the liver and may need review.

Monitoring liver blood tests

Periodic blood tests help track liver health over time.

Additional liver testing when indicated

FibroScan or other testing may be repeated to check for scarring.

There is no single treatment plan that is right for every patient. Your fatty liver specialist can provide recommendations based on your specific diagnosis and medical history.

Why See a Gastroenterologist for Fatty Liver?

A gastroenterologist can evaluate conditions affecting the digestive system and liver. A liver evaluation may help determine the following.

Whether fatty liver is present

Blood tests, imaging, and history are reviewed together to confirm the diagnosis.

Whether another liver condition should be considered

Other causes such as viral hepatitis, alcohol, medicines, and autoimmune or inherited conditions are considered.

Whether liver inflammation or fibrosis needs further evaluation

FibroScan and blood-based scores help estimate liver scarring without a needle biopsy.

What testing may be appropriate

Only tests that are useful for your situation are recommended.

Whether ongoing monitoring is recommended

Follow-up is based on your level of liver fat and scarring and your risk factors.
