An EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) lets your gastroenterologist examine the esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine. Careful preparation helps the examination go smoothly and keeps your appointment on schedule.

On the Day of Your EGD
A few practical things make the day easier. Your care team will confirm the details that apply to you.
Arrange a ride home
Sedation is commonly used for an EGD, so you will not be able to drive afterwards. Plan for a responsible adult to take you home.
Bring your documents
Photo ID, insurance card, and a current list of everything you take — prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements.
Allow extra time
The procedure itself is short, but your visit also includes check-in, preparation and time in recovery before you are discharged.
Dress comfortably
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave jewellery and valuables at home.
About food, drink and medicines: fasting times and any changes to blood thinners, diabetes medicines or other prescriptions are decided for each patient. Follow the written instructions given to you, and do not stop a prescription medicine unless a healthcare professional has told you to.
